Do you like to entertain outdoors? Do you dream of having the house on the block where everyone wants to hang out but lack the funds to build an in-ground pool or a hot-tub?

I have the perfect answer for you: build a backyard pizza oven.

Why You Should Build Your Own Backyard Pizza Oven

There are plenty of good reasons why you will love having your own pizza oven in your backyard.

However, I will tell you the number one reason right off the bat. You could instantly add resale value to your home depending on your market. Some backyard pizza ovens have been reported as being appraised between $8,000 and $10,000.

That’s a significant return on investment — all for a load of bricks and a little bit of masonry work.

However, that is just the best part of building a pizza oven. If you ever sell your house, you are much more likely to get interested buyers and higher offers because of that oven.

But the real value is in having the oven.

Many pizza ovens are built not only to cook pizzas but to also smoke and barbecue meat, rotisserie roast poultry and pigs, and to fry and bake just about anything else you can imagine

Pizza ovens use clean-burning wood for fuel. In addition, they are incredibly efficient – some of them stay warm for days once they are heated.

These ovens can be made with beautiful material, adding rather than detracting to the look and feel of your home.

Unlike an in-ground pool that sits unused for most of the year in a large part of the country, your pizza oven can be used to extend the usefulness of your patio or outdoor space.

With a DIY kit and a bit of time, most people can put together their own pizza oven from scratch, and the materials are very inexpensive.

Backyard pizza oven

Building Your Own Outdoor Pizza Oven

Now, you can hire an expert mason to craft your oven just perfectly. If that’s what you want to do, give us a call, and we will be happy to point you in the right direction.

However, it’s entirely possible to build a pizza oven with little or no experience.

If you want to get some kicks, do a Google search for DIY pizza ovens. You will see some truly amazing feats of engineering using upcycled materials.

However, unless you are a science genius, you are probably going to need a kit or at least some detailed instructions.

BrickWood Ovens sells DIY kits with detailed instructions – sometimes even with foolproof foam molds. All you have to do is purchase the right materials.

Since pizza ovens need to hit high temperatures – up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit – all of your materials need to be rated for high temperatures. You can’t use just any bricks or mortar.

Outdoor pizza ovens also need to be built according to the right specifications to allow the heat and smoke to go where they need to go. BrickWood Ovens makes this process easy so that even a novice can build an oven in three weekends.

Takeaway

Even if you are not very handy, consider building your own backyard brick pizza oven.

This is also a great way to increase the value of your house if you’re trying to sell it.

Whatever your question – about pizza ovens or anything else construction – please give us a call. We would be honored to help!

Are you thinking about going for a different look on your home exterior?

Do you want an update that will stand the test of time and still be what all your neighbors are dreaming of?

The following are the eight most popular home exterior design trends for this year. However, we are confident these trends will continue well into the future.

2019 Most Popular Home Exterior Trends

Some of these home exterior trends are more significant home renovations. Some of them are quick fixes you could do yourself over the weekend.

Let’s look at the more expensive, lasting options first.

Modern Farmhouse Style

If you want to follow one of the biggest trends right now and re-do your whole exterior, consider the modern farmhouse style.

This style consists of board and batten siding and high contrast colors, such as white painted siding and black window frames.

Modern farmhouse style incorporates some of the traditional farmhouse elements, like gabled rooflines and standing seam metal roofing with modern lighting fixtures and open floor plans.

Mixed Natural Materials

Mixing materials on your home exterior – such as brick, stone, siding, wood, and metal – is a prevalent trend right now and it’s here to stay.

There are many ways to do this well, such as installing stone footings, vinyl or wood siding, wooden corbels, and wrought iron light fixtures.

Stone continues to be the most popular natural element to add, and it receives a high return on investment.

Front Porches & Inviting Entrances

A front porch feels welcoming. It’s a place to dress up the front of your house, and it can make a serious style impact.

By combining this trend with mixed natural materials, you can add a brick or stone front porch, or beef up the columns with timber beams for a more natural look.

Hidden entrances are one of those design trends that are definitely out. In years past, it was cool to hide your front door, but no longer.

Copper Gutters

In keeping with the natural elements theme, copper gutters have continued to rise in popularity.

Copper gutters are beautiful both before and after they acquire their natural green patina, and they have a long lifespan.

If you want to take your home’s look up a notch, consider installing new copper gutters, or painting your old ones a copper color.

Home Exterior Trends – Quick Fixes

If you are not into spending a fortune on changing the style of your home exterior, here are a few ways to up your curb appeal with 2019’s biggest trends.

Front Door

It’s time to ditch the red front door. Although it gives your house a nice punch of color, there are many other colors to choose from, and red is now looking dated.

If you are painting your door, opt for something classic like black or an unusual blue color to be on trend.

If you are getting a new door, consider something weighty but light-bringing: a glass and iron front door.

New front doors are always a high return on investment, so you can’t go wrong. In fact, a new steel door has a national recoup value of 74.9% according to the Remodeling’s Cost vs. Value Report.

In addition, glass panels can go a long way toward opening up the whole front of your house.

Exterior Color

Choosing the best color for your house can be tough. We have all seen that Smurf blue house and wondered what they could have been thinking. One thing is for sure: “painted ladies” are out.

If you have a Victorian house, unless you are on the beach, it’s time to rethink the bright color scheme.

The same thing goes for just about any other bright color out there for your home exterior. If you still want to go bold, opt for a bold, dark blue color.

Landscaping

Maybe your lush garden is your thing. However, if you have been yearning to tear out those big bushes in the front, do it.

Simple landscaping is and will continue to be on trend. A few small bushes, maybe some hostas, and a lovely window box or planter is all you need to complete your exterior look these days. Opt for dark mulch.

Address Numbers

This is a favorite weekend project because it has the potential to make a significant impact with so little.

Big house numbers are in, and not just big, but sleek and simple. Look for large, black numerals and install them in a place where they are likely to stand out. It’s that simple.

Bringing it Home

There are many ways, big and small, to improve your home exterior.

If you have any questions about new siding, doors, windows or roofing, please give us a call! We would be happy to walk you through all of the different options.

It’s National Roofing Week! This week has been designated by the National Roofing Contractors Association – or the NRCA.

Being a member of the NRCA means a company has the highest professional standards in the country.

There are more than 3,500 members from the United States and 53 other countries around the world. In addition, local, state, regional, and international roofing contractor associations call the NRCA their voice in the industry.

Because the NRCA is one of the most respected trade associations within the construction industry, it is in a unique position to champion the businesses, contractors, and potential contractors who bring you the very best.

NRCA’s Mission

One of the NRCA’s state goals for National Roofing Week is to raise awareness about the importance of roofs and professional roofing contractors, which is what we try to do with this blog as well.

As a professional roofing company, we often see that home and building owners ignore or neglect their roofs until they fall into disrepair.

If you have never had the experience of needing to replace the roof on your home or business, you may not think about how valuable this piece of real estate is.

Roofs are protecting our historic buildings, valuable businesses, and priceless families.

National Roofing Week seeks to highlight the vital role your local roofing contractor plays in your community, and how important it is to make informed decisions about your roof.

How Do You Celebrate National Roofing Week?

This isn’t exactly like National Donut Day. We know you all aren’t going to go out and buy a new roof in celebration.

This is a chance for us to show you more of what we do and why we care so much.

It’s a chance for roofing businesses to share their charitable donations and to be highlighted in trade publications. It’s a chance for you to see who’s in our roofing “family” and to share their stories on social media during #nationalroofingweek.

In addition, it is also a chance for us to help the NRCA promote careers in the roofing or construction industries.

The NRCA is raising $100,000 toward the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program in its first-ever Giving Day held on June 7th. The funds will provide scholarships to students planning to pursue construction careers.

National Roofing Week 2019

The social media agenda for the week of June 2-8, 2019 includes:

Sunday, June 2: National Roofing Week kickoff

Monday, June 3: Charitable projects—share photos that demonstrate your company’s charitable giving

Tuesday, June 4: Employee training—share photos that demonstrate how you train your workers

Wednesday, June 5: Employee appreciation—share photos of your company’s employees

Thursday, June 6: Signature projects—share photos showcasing your company’s signature residential and commercial projects

Friday, June 7: Celebration—share photos showing us how your company celebrated National Roofing Week

Saturday, June 8: Wrap-up

Bringing it Home

We believe National Roofing Week is a needed tool to highlight the importance of your roof and your local roofing contractor.

If you have never heard of the National Roofing Contractors Association, take a moment to appreciate how it supports us.

As members of this respected organization, we can stay up to date on the latest technology and ways of doing business so we can bring the highest value to you, our valued customers!

It’s National Roofing Week! Did you know there is a whole week to highlight and celebrate the importance of roofs and professional roofing contractors in our country? Well, there is.

The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) is one of the most respected trade associations in the construction industry. Being a member of this association, for a roofing company is the gold standard.

The NRCA is the voice of roofing contractors and professionals and has more than 3,500 members from all 50 states of the union, as well as from 53 other countries around the world. There are 97 local, state, regional and international roofing contractor associations who are also affiliated with the NRCA.

The companies associated with the NRCA are a diverse group, ranging from companies who have less than $1 million in sales per year up to companies who sell up to $20 million per year. Like Renovations Roofing & Remodeling, Inc. many of these contractors do both commercial and residential roofing.

History of the NRCA

The NRCA has been around since 1886. Most of the businesses involved with the organization have been around for over 20 years. This organization and the contracting companies affiliated with it are dedicated to enhancing every part of the roofing industry.

As a nonprofit organization, the NRCA represents every segment of the roofing industry and there are more of those than you may realize. This includes contractors, manufacturers, architects, distributors, consultants, building owners, engineers, and government agencies from counties, cities, and states. The NRCA helps us serve you better.

Dedicated to Raising Awareness

That’s why they dedicate a week to raising awareness every year. As part of this association, we want to send the message that roofs are important to any community. In addition, so are the decisions you make about your roofing system; how you maintain and replace your roof.

Think about it. So much of our lives revolve around having the proper shelter. In many cities around the world some of our most precious links to the past is our architecture. All of that is made possible by a good roof. And not just a good roof, but by reputable and responsible contractors and other roofing professionals who are experts on keeping your roofs and your buildings sound.

National Roofing Week Agenda

During National Roofing Week, NRCA hosts an annual children’s art contest, sponsored by A.C.T Metal Deck Supply and the International Roofing Expo® (IRE). If you are an NRCA member or employee, any child related to you is encouraged to submit their artwork for the contest.

The week’s social media agenda includes:

Sunday, June 3: National Roofing Week Kickoff/Intro Video

Monday, June 4: Employee appreciation

Tuesday, June 5: Employee training

Wednesday, June 6: Charity

Thursday, June 7: Showcase signature residential and commercial projects

Friday, June 8: How NRCA Members celebrated/Announcement of Children’s Art Contest winners

Saturday, June 9: National Roofing Week Wrap-up

Takeaway

You may not have known there was a National Roofing Week or an International Roofing Expo. However, the organizations who keep them going are integral to the way we do our job for you. They help us by giving us the latest information on new technology and ways of doing business.

By being a member of the NRCA, Renovations Roofing & Remodeling, Inc. is dedicated to improving every aspect of our business so we can bring that value to you, our most valuable customers!

Did you know you can recycle your old asphalt shingles?

Many homeowners are becoming more earth-conscious these days and more recycling savvy. It can be distressing to see all that waste from a roof tear-off in a big dumpster to a homeowner who pictures these things ending up buried with other trash for hundreds of years.

However, there are other options now. Many types of asphalt shingles can be recycled. It takes asphalt 400 years to decompose in a landfill. If the asphalt can be reused, that’s far preferable.

Thanks to their asphalt content, your shingles can be used in other products, like asphalt pavement for roads. Your roof could become a new 200 foot section of highway.

The process involves grinding up shingles that get added to pavement. This improves the quality of newly-made pavement.

Other avenues are being explored. They include things like using the material as an input to make roofing products or road maintenance products or even to produce energy.

How to Recycle Asphalt Shingles

The good news is that if you live in one of the major city areas of the United States, shingle recycling will most likely be available.

You can check online at www.shinglerecycling.org and www.earth911.com or you can call 1-800-CLEANUP. Not every shingle recycling location is listed on these websites.

You can also email one of these places if you aren’t having much luck finding a recycling facility. Don’t give up after one search. Chances are you can find a solution.

Once you have found a facility, call ahead to make sure you find out what that recycler allows, in terms of material separation. Each recycler has specific rules regarding separation of shingles from other materials. In addition, nails do not have to be pulled out. They are separated from shingles by a powerful magnet before the shingles are ground up and they get recycled too.

In some cases, recycling is free but it always costs less than putting them in a landfill. This is especially true if you separate all the materials correctly before sending them to the recycler.

If You Have To Throw Them Away

Some shingles don’t meet the requirements needed to be recycled for other purposes. If your shingles don’t meet the guidelines required by your local recycling facility, you will need to arrange for them to be disposed of properly.

Sometimes asphalt shingles contain harmful substances like asbestos. In that case, special precautions need to be taken and they have to be handled by proper waste control authorities. Your roofing company should be trained and know what to look for. If they see it, they will have to stop to properly remediate and dispose of anything containing asbestos.

Takeaway

Asphalt can be reused for many useful and important things. If you desire a more earth-friendly roof tear-off and replacement, recycling is the way to go. Start looking around for local recycling facilities as you look for contractors and calculate costs. That way you can total up the cost of recycling right along with the cost of your new roof.

If you have requirements for the recycling facility, you can easily add them to your conversation with your contractor. At the end of the day, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you didn’t add that huge pile to a landfill.

Have you heard about Tesla solar roof tiles?

The first Tesla solar roof tiles are set to go into production in the summer of 2017. Tesla, Inc. announced in May that both smooth and textured black glass tiles would be available to order online.

Not only that, but Tesla, Inc. claims its solar roof tiles will be cheaper and last longer than any other kind of roofing tile on the market, before the added savings generated by energy production.

Apparently, it’s looking like Tesla, Inc. is delivering on these claims. The company has reported that the average homeowner can expect to pay $21.85 per square foot for a Tesla Solar Roof.

Based in Palo Alto, California, Tesla, Inc. is an American automaker, energy storage company, and solar panel manufacturer.

Pros of Solar Roof Tiles

Of course, asphalt shingles are still the most economic roofing solution out there. It’s important to note that Tesla’s solar roof tiles will be competitive in price and longevity with other tile options, not with every roofing option out there.

However, the company has tested its tempered glass tiles against giant balls of hail at high velocity. They have performed better, in many cases, than other types of tile.

But not all tiles on a given roof would be solar tiles. Only those tiles in optimal position would be solar. The rest would be the simple tempered glass tiles. Here’s what Tesla, Inc. has to say about the durability of its tiles:

“Made with tempered glass, Solar Roof tiles are more than three times stronger than standard roofing tiles. That’s why we offer the best warranty in the industry – the lifetime of your house, or infinity, whichever comes first.”

Tesla expects the solar component in the tiles to last 30 years. That’s about the longest warranty for solar panels on the market.

In addition, Tesla will manage the “Solar Roof experience—from the removal of your existing roof through design, permitting, installation, operations, and maintenance of the new Solar Roof.” The company states installation should take the same time as a regular roof installation: 5-7 days.

So what’s the catch? Is it possible that Tesla solar tiles will make all other roofing solutions defunct, and soon?

Solar Roof Tiles Cons

According to a low-carbon innovation analyst in a question and answer series published at Forbes, the answer is, not necessarily. While Tesla, Inc.’s solar tiles are attractive and durable, there are some cons when it comes to solar roof tiles.

While in many places in the country, the cost of the roof plus the electricity it produces may make it cheaper than a traditional roof and getting electricity off the grid, this isn’t a one size fits all solution. Electricity costs vary from state to state, so it won’t be cheaper in all places.

Though the tiles may be comparable in price than other roofing tiles, the price of installing a Tesla roof will still make it necessary to have it subsidized somehow.

Only about 25% of households are oriented to make the most of a solar roof. In fact, only detached, ranch-style southern U.S. houses could generate enough electricity to power the home for a year.

Office buildings, apartment buildings, condos, and buildings like that have a smaller surface area and usually use their roofs for other things like mechanical operations for elevators and HVAC units. Only big box stores, warehouses, and casinos have the high roof surface area compared to interior volume ratios needed to generate that much power. Tesla’s predictions for 33% of power to come from solar are most likely off for most houses and businesses. It may be more like 10%.

Since more and more people live in urban areas and fewer in detached homes, fewer people are going to end up benefiting from this technology.

Tesla, Inc. also reports only a 2% degradation of solar capability due to the decorativeness of the tiles. This report is probably based on when the sun is perfectly aligned at 90 degrees to the tiles, which won’t happen the whole day, if at all. There is likely a higher degradation in usefulness than 2%, compared to regular solar panels.

Takeaway

Tesla solar roof tiles are an innovative invention. If you are interested in generating your own solar power and you want the look of an expensive tile with no ugly solar panels obstructing the aesthetics of your home, this may be a great product to look into.

However, make sure you do a cost-benefit analysis. You may find it isn’t saving you as much money or generating as much power as you had thought.

The last decade has seen a sharp increase in solar panel installations around the country. There are now many more federal and local tax incentives for homeowners to take advantage of when considering whether to install them. Increasing fears over climate change have made this green energy alternative a viable option for many.

Let’s take a close look at the pros and cons of rooftop solar panels to determine if they are a comprehensive option for you.

Pros of Solar Panels

You can decrease your carbon footprint by an average of 35,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year. To offset that amount of CO2, you would have to plant 88 trees every year.

You can save an average of $84 per month on your electricity bill according to SolarResourceGuide.org.

You can still receive a tax credit for your solar energy. The federal government allows homeowners to deduct 30% of your solar power system costs from your federal taxes through an Investment Tax Credit. If you don’t owe taxes in the year you install, you can roll it over to the following year.

There are a good number of other tax incentives offered in the State of Michigan, which can also help offset the cost of installation. The solar pro or roofing company you hire should be able to guide you to any or all of those that apply to you.

Depending on where you are in the country or how much space you have, you could go completely off the grid in terms of your electricity needs.

It will very likely increase the value of your home. Future buyers will get all the advantages without the upfront costs!

Cons of solar panels

Expensive to install. The national average is still around $17,000. You can’t just do it yourself. You have to hire a pro, and the panels always need additional wiring.

Not every home lends itself well to solar panels. If your roof doesn’t get enough direct sunlight every day, it won’t be worth the money to install them. Even a chimney in the wrong place can shade the panels and decrease their efficiency.

Not every area of the country has the best access to the sun. This goes without saying, but if you live in a cloudy area, it is probably not going to be as cost-efficient. In addition, even if you have enough sunny days, your angle to the sun – because of your position on the earth relative to the sun – also affects the effectiveness of solar energy.

The technical term for this is “insolation.” Not every home in Michigan is going to have enough surface area to make installing solar panels worthwhile. This is because we don’t have as much insolation as, say, Las Vegas.

Important Things to Keep In Mind

If you do decide to go for solar, make sure you keep these things in mind:

Hire a solar pro or contracting company with plenty of experience in all the ins and outs of installing solar panels.

Make sure your professional offers a good warranty – the inverter should be covered for at least ten years and the panels should be covered for 20-25.

Use panels made in the USA, that way the warranty will cover you even if the manufacturer goes out of business.

Hire the company who will install the panels themselves, no outsourcing. That company will have much more incentive to make sure it’s done right.

Takeaway

Installing solar panels is a big decision. It’s definitely earth-friendly and can have great long-term benefits. However, you need to make sure you can reap those benefits before you dive in.

After the Highland, Michigan hail storm of 2014, storm chasers were knocking on doors throughout Highland offering roofing deals that sounded great.

If you’re not planning to fix your roof and it gets damaged in a storm, the expense can feel like a blow. Scammers know you are hoping for the best possible news: you can pay a small amount of money, and the job can get done very quickly.

Unfortunately, you are going to end up losing more money if you believe these scammers. There are other ways you can lose money to a roofing scammer. Most homeowners don’t have that much experience with roofing contractors, so they don’t know.

Storm Chasers and Roofing Scams Common Practices

Here are some common ways fake roofers scam customers:

Storm Chasers

Storm chasers are commonly out-of-town roofing “outfits” that look for areas in the country that just experienced severe weather.

For example, the high-wind damage that left much of Michigan without power for several days earlier in March 2017. These outfits know insurance companies are likely covering roofing damage in those areas, so they go there.

They often offer free inspections, pass out leaflets, and ultimately give you a replacement that only lasts a few years. Sometimes the scammers will even damage your roof more to make sure insurance companies will pay. You can protect yourself by asking a few questions about their insurance and licensing.

If they can’t produce written proof of both of those things, kick them to the curb. You’re not going to get good work out of them (they have no incentive to do good work) OR your money back in the end because they’ll be long gone.

Low Bids

Again, these guys prey on inexperienced homeowners.

Most people don’t want to pay more than they have to for a new roof, so they underbid the other companies knowing they will raise the price mid-project. The company will blame rising material costs and expect you to pay. And since you are mid-project, you will pay to get the work complete.

The truth is manufacturers notify contractors weeks in advance when material prices are going to change. It’s also true that this is not the responsibility of the customer. Rising prices mid-project is a major red flag.

Make sure you get a quote in writing. Better yet, if one company is significantly lower than all the others, avoid it.

Down Payment Scam

The down payment scam is another deception tactic that can happen to anyone.

One red flag a lot of homeowners don’t know about is asking for a down payment before work begins to buy materials and hire personnel. This check, often in the form of the homeowner’s insurance payment, can disappear quickly along with the roofing company.

These scammers particularly target areas with many retirees who probably own their homes and have insurance checks made out to them. However, scammers also target homeowners paying mortgages.

The main way to protect yourself against this scam is to never make a down payment to a company before the supplies for your roof have been delivered. Don’t do business with anyone who wants you to sign over your check before any work starts or supplies are delivered.

Bringing it Home

These aren’t the only scams out there, but they are some of the most common. The best thing you can do to avoid scams is to do your research and hire a reputable local company that can provide references.

And of course, if you are in Southeast Michigan, Renovations Roofing & Remodeling, Inc. would be delighted to take care of all your roofing needs.
